Werkplaats Maasvlakte

In the past, freight locomotives were maintained elsewhere in the Netherlands. As a result, it was not possible to redeploy them directly and instead the locomotives first had to be transported to Rotterdam. To increase the use of the locomotives, a brand-new locomotive workshop was constructed at the Rotterdam Maasvlakte under contract to Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE), Siemens Mobility and LWR bv. MRCE leases locomotives manufactured by companies such as Siemens Mobility to rail transporters. By servicing and maintaining freight train locomotives 'on the job', they can be immediately redeployed to transport goods from the Port of Rotterdam to the European interior.

Customer's challenge

Werkplaats Maasvlakte

The ability to service their ‘own leased’ locomotives on a timely basis was one of the customer’s biggest challenges. The workshop had to be in operation for this purpose after the summer of 2019. In addition, making the investment in the workshop profitable was just as much of a challenge.

What we did for MRCE, Siemens Mobility and LWR bv
We designed and constructed the locomotive workshop and are now responsible for its maintenance. The construction also included the installation of parking tracks, the site and the connection to the railway line.

To make the workshop profitable, facilities for electric locomotives were developed, such as an underfloor wheel lathe and a high voltage test facility
Almost all of the work was performed by Strukton business units. In addition to Antea Group and Strukton Systems for the design, and Strukton Rail, Strukton Civiel and Strukton Worksphere for the construction phase, Strukton Rolling Stock was also involved. They assumed responsibility for the development of a high voltage converter. Strukton Worksphere is responsible for the building’s maintenance.
In the beginning there was only a list with approximately ten functional specifications.

The result • By applying the Early Design Concept for the development of the workshop, we were able to accelerate the implementation phase. As a result, the workshop was completed eighteen months earlier than would normally have been the case.
• The customer is especially satisfied with the way in which safety is demonstrably incorporated into the design.

The trend within projects

Clients have a need for solutions provided by a single party that is involved from the very beginning of a project
