Faster deployment of freight locomotives
- Client MRCE, Siemens Mobility & LWR bv

Country
The Netherlands
- Location Rotterdam
- Status Delivered

In the past, freight locomotives were maintained elsewhere in the Netherlands. As a result, it was not possible to redeploy them directly and instead the locomotives first had to be transported to Rotterdam. To increase the use of the locomotives, a brand-new locomotive workshop was constructed at the Rotterdam Maasvlakte under contract to Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE), Siemens Mobility and LWR bv. MRCE leases locomotives manufactured by companies such as Siemens Mobility to rail transporters. By servicing and maintaining freight train locomotives 'on the job', they can be immediately redeployed to transport goods from the Port of Rotterdam to the European interior.
Customer's challenge

The ability to service their ‘own leased’ locomotives on a timely basis was one of the customer’s biggest challenges. The workshop had to be in operation for this purpose after the summer of 2019. In addition, making the investment in the workshop profitable was just as much of a challenge.
To make the workshop profitable, facilities for electric locomotives were developed, such as an underfloor wheel lathe and a high voltage test facility

In the beginning there was only a list with approximately ten functional specifications.
• The customer is especially satisfied with the way in which safety is demonstrably incorporated into the design.
