New power electronics extends the service life of old metro trains Many railway lines in the British countryside do not have any overhead lines. As a result, polluting diesel trains drive there. Using Strukton's power electronics, Vivarail is converting old London underground trains for use on rural lines. The result: lower maintenance costs and reduced emissions.

Vivarail considers having satisfied passengers and travelling in an environmentally friendly way of paramount importance. Furthermore, Vivarail likes the idea of giving old vehicles a second life. Vivarail also aims for lower costs and less maintenance.

This is how we are helping Vivarail

The power electronics is one of the most important components of a train. Strukton Rail supplies the traction system (drive system) and the onboard power system, installs these systems and contributes ideas to the design. In addition, we supply a modern IGBT traction converter, which replaces the camshaft resistor. A static converter supplies electricity for the air conditioning, WiFi, USB chargers and other new technologies in the train. 

Vivarail supplies trains for the following lines: 

  • 3 x 2-car DEMU trains for the Marston Vale railway line
  • 5 x 3-car hybrid DEMU trains for Wales & Borders

Vivarail has an operating battery-powered train as a demonstration vehicle. Strukton Rail is working on a fast charger for this vehicle.

We believe that the battery train is the future. The change from a diesel train to a battery train reduces a huge amount of CO2. The battery trains have a range of 60 miles between the charges, which makes them fit for a lot of train connections.
