Construction of the Flevoland Pavilion at the Floriade Expo 2022 has started. The pavilion will be named Food Forum and will be a meeting place where experts can collaborate on the food system of tomorrow. During the Expo, visitors will be introduced to the Province of Flevoland and its role as a food producer in particular. Entrepreneurs, municipalities and organisations in Flevoland can use this opportunity to focus the spotlight on themselves.

Innovative and Sustainable

The pavilion is designed by the architectural firm DoepelStrijkers and is based on Nature Based Building principles. The design is inspired by nature, mimics natural processes and makes use of renewable materials. Food Forum shows how we live in the Province of Flevoland, over four metres below sea level. The building appears to have been lifted up to sea level and is constructed using modular wood elements. The clay façade refers to the fertile Flevoland soil.

Circular Construction

The pavilion is an example of circular construction. It is largely made from renewable materials. The finishing floor of the first storey is made of recycled concrete reinforced with elephant grass – giant miscanthus – to create miscanthus concrete, a Strukton innovation. It is much lighter than traditional concrete, sound-deadening and fully recyclable. Food Forum is the second building in the Netherlands where this concrete is used. The breathing façade regulates the humidity in the building in a natural way and contributes to a healthy interior climate. Strukton Worksphere is responsible for the construction and engineering.

Stage for Flevoland

“The pavilion’s construction is about to get off the ground! I am extremely proud that the ideas will take shape. Flevoland will soon be one fantastic building richer. Even before the Floriade opens, innovations and solutions to current food issues will be shown here. Things like climate-adaptive agriculture, stimulating the consumption of plant-based proteins and building local food chains. It could not be more relevant, especially in these times!” says Appelman, member of the Provincial Executive.
Before and after Floriade Expo 2022, Food Forum will be the place where entrepreneurs, students and researchers will be meeting each other to generate new ideas about the food system of the future. There will be a programme about various food-related topics to stimulate innovation. Innovations that can be tested in actual practice at testing grounds throughout all of Flevoland. Others can use Food Forum to organise meetings or rent a workspace. Together with the Aeres University of Applied Sciences and Village, a space for young entrepreneurs, Food Forum forms the start of the Flevo Campus at the Floriade grounds. This Flevoland knowledge centre brings study programmes, research, development and entrepreneurship relating to food issues together.
