On Wednesday 10 October, Rasenberg Infra, subsidiary of Strukton Civiel, is applying asphalt in Breda which consists for 97% of reused materials: Greenfalt. The asphalt mix is a sustainable innovation. New is the combination of reused asphalt and recycled ballast material from railways in all asphalt layers: the bottom layer, intermediate layer and surface layer. The sustainable asphalt mix not only consists of reused materials but also reduces noise. It is thus the 'silent asphalt', an important feature for the application in Breda.

Innovation in partnership with the market
The municipality of Breda commissioned the application of the recycled 'green' asphalt on the Oranjesingel. The project is a close collaboration between the municipality and contractor. Greetje Bos, councillor for public space and energy: "I'm proud of this amazing pilot. The first in Breda with a full construction of sustainable and silent asphalt. Liveability is another important aspect in sustainability. Because I believe that if people's welfare improves, everything gets better. Over the coming eight years, we will definitely be monitoring this noise-reducing surface layer."

In this project, all layers of the road consist of asphalt, 97% of which is made from circular materials, including a noise-reducing surface layer. Jan van de Riet, director of Rasenberg Infra: "We've noticed the increasing importance of sustainability, circularity and noise reduction for our customers. We keep pace with those developments in the market. Reuse of materials in asphalt is not basically new. The composition continues to develop to meet the needs of our customers. We see that the demand for noise reduction in asphalt is becoming increasingly important. For the province of Noord Brabant, we have constructed test sections with a Greenfalt noise-reducing surface layer. From the test sections, Greenfalt has shown that it fulfils expectations with respect to noise reduction and other quality requirements. Greenfalt is a sustainable extension to our assortment, with which our customers like government authorities as well as private parties can achieve their sustainability goals.”

Production and certification
Greenfalt is produced in Strukton Civiel's own asphalt centres, including the asphalt mill in Breda. For this asphalt, no extraction of new natural resources is required, which generates a reduction in CO2 emissions compared with traditional asphalt. The application also ensures that old asphalt or old ballast is not disposed of as waste, but is given a new life as a high quality material. The first projects involving Greenfalt give important results for the wider application of sustainable asphalt. Whilst monitoring the practical examples in the test sections, we are also working on confirming the certification of the value of this innovation.
