The Green Carpet plan
The Green Carpet ensures one total approach to mobility and liveability through good accessibility of city and Euregion, traffic flow on the A2 at Geusselt intersection and Europaplein junction, and new opportunities for the development of neighbouring districts now that 80% of the traffic is underground.
Only thanks to the partnership within the steering group consisting of Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management), municipality of Maastricht, Province of Limburg, municipality of Meerssen and the joint efforts with constructor Avenue2, the consortium of Strukton and Ballast Nedam, was the innovative planning and implementation of the infrastructure for this complex project achieved within the 10-year planning and within the government budget.
The commissioning of the tunnel at the end of 2016 was a historic moment for the city and region. The around 2 km long double-decker tunnel has 2 x two tubes on top of each other and is part of a totally renewed traffic system covering 6 km. The new traffic system meant a significant improvement in the city's accessibility, traffic safety and liveability. The through traffic flow on the A2, one of the most important motorways in our country, has also been considerably improved as a result of the tunnel. Now in 2018, the design of the new public area on top of the tunnel has also been completed, with pedestrians and cyclists being given plenty of space. This year, construction will start on the first 120 energy-neutral houses. Until 2026, another 980 houses will follow. East and west will now be united and peace and space created in the city of Maastricht.
