On Tuesday 10 July, Strukton Civiel signed the Concrete Agreement. Strukton Civiel is one of the initiators and promotors of this agreement and is proud that the Concrete Agreement has been achieved. For Strukton, sustainability starts with thinking together in lifespans. That creates awareness and concrete actions follow. The signing of the agreement stimulates the development of sustainable concrete as an innovation and new export product.

Through this agreement, the infrastructure is choosing for the future. An important step towards an economically healthy concrete sector through sustainable concrete. Alongside Strukton Civiel, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven also signed the Concrete Agreement on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Three other Ministries are also involved: Interior, Economic Affairs and Climate, Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Other signatories are customers ProRail and Rijkswaterstaat, construction companies, manufacturers, suppliers and architects.

The 'Concrete Agreement for sustainable growth' is a national chain agreement for future-proofing the concrete chain. In this agreement, fifty directors from the concrete chain and relevant stakeholders anchor targets in the field of circularity, CO2 reduction, natural and social capital. In the Netherlands, 15 million m3 of new concrete is added every year. Manufacturers, customers and contractors are now agreeing to work extensively together on sustainability, from 100% recycling of materials to a significant reduction of CO2 emissions.

With the Concrete Agreement, the chain, from customer to manufacturer and from completion to re-use, chooses a more sustainable future. The most important agreements in the Concrete Agreement are cooperation and transparency in the chain, promoting the growth of demand for 'green' concrete by incorporating sustainability criteria in tenders and agreements focused on the circular economy, CO2 reduction and Natural Capital.

An example
Strukton Civiel is also working on sustainable concrete, via C2CA-technology B.V., a company in the GBN Groep, subsidiary of Strukton Civiel and Delft University of Technology. From this company, technology is being developed with which all the fractions of old concrete can be converted into new concrete. Also the fine fraction. Strukton thus provides input into European projects like HISER and VEEP (Horizon2020). In addition, via GBN Ballastrecycling, Strukton Civiel supplies material for concrete and Strukton Prefab works on the Green Silence Wall, a noise screen made of miscanthus concrete. Through research into circular concrete and the supply of circular materials, Strukton Civiel works on a closed concrete chain. In this way, Strukton Civiel saves natural materials and works on innovative export products.

'The Concrete Agreement seamlessly links up with and makes a major contribution to the targets mentioned in the Climate Agreement. It speeds up innovation, creates new products and opens new markets, which will yield big climate benefits.
