Strukton Worksphere and BESIX proudly deliver the new building for Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. Seven institutes at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences started the academic year 2018/2019 in a brand-new building. This sustainable new building covering 22,000 m2 comprises 7 storeys. All the faculties are accessible to the 5,800 students via 13 escalators/stairways leading from a large atrium. The building was completed by the Spark consortium, a partnership between Strukton Worksphere and BESIX Nederland, which will continue to be involved in the technical management and maintenance for the next 15 years.

Traditionally, an educational building is a collection of classrooms, an auditorium and a canteen. Strukton Worksphere and BESIX Nederland shaped the project of meeting and connecting and produced the ultimate place for students and staff to study and work, with a great design, a transparent character and a view outside from all over the building.

‘The overall aim of the project is to design, deliver and maintain a really good, functional, high-quality and sustainable educational building. We've completed this building in a real partnership with the University of Applied Sciences in a very open and transparent collaboration based on trust and always based on the overall project goal.’ Twan Strijbos, Design & Build Manager
The canary yellow escalator is a prominent feature. Other highlights are the modular inner wall system with noise insulation and absorption and the shell of solar panels on the roof which conceal all the installations. Providing the icing on the cake are the 11 roof gardens where students can study with all the facilities they need. On the ground floor are the ToGo Areas for coffee and lunch and various hospitality concepts. The building is thus completely designed and equipped for connection with and by students. You can sit here, read, study, chat, work together... why leave?

Today on 12 July, consortium Spark presents the key to Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. The academic year starts on 3 September. The official opening will take place in the autumn.

Gasless, sustainable and BREEAM-Excellent
The new building for Utrecht University of Applied Sciences is a gasless building which generates enough energy for its own use, with only a modest electric boiler to accommodate peaks in usage. Sustainable choices like LED lighting, thermal energy storage, solar panels, daylight regulation and CO2-driven ventilation, heat recovery in air handling units, dirt-repellent cladding, water-saving taps and rainwater infiltration all contribute to a sustainable environment. The new building therefore amply deserves its 4 stars from BREEAM-Excellent (certified).

Performance contract
The commission for this building was presented to the market as a performance contract (UAV-GC). Consortium Spark, a partnership between Strukton Worksphere and BESIX Nederland, signed for the design, construction and 15 years' maintenance and management of this building. The building was designed by Danish architects Smidt Hammer Lassen, who ensured that, despite the compact character, there is a view outside from all over the building.
