Beverwijk is the proud owner of the first innovative, recyclable bio-based noise barrier in the Netherlands.

For Pro-Rail, the Eco Silence Wall was erected along the railway track here, level with Aagterpoort underpass. Unique, because the noise barrier is made of grass: Elephant grass or Miscanthus Gigantus. Strukton developed, produced and installed this noise barrier.

The Eco Silence Wall will soon be included in the National Environmental Database. A tool which Rijkswaterstaat and ProRail use to measure sustainable solutions of clients.

No trains thundering past causing noise pollution, but an environment which benefits from its own nature. The grass that used to grow around the corner now protects the environment from noise pollution. The low-maintenance noise barrier also has a natural look and feel. To close the circle, Miscanthus concrete can also be recycled locally. It can be re-used in new Miscanthus products or construction materials.

Miscanthus
Miscanthus, or Elephant grass, is found in various places in the country. This fast-growing grass offers many benefits. While it grows, Elephant grass absorbs a huge amount of CO2. Considerably more than other plants and trees. After harvesting, it is used in concrete, in which the CO2 is sustainably stored. The Miscanthus concrete is applied in a coarse, open structure. This promotes the noise absorption. Sublime characteristics, direct from the surroundings. Miscanthus is a harvest product. Every year, new crop grows without depleting the planet. Miscanthus is grown regionally, so transport movements are also limited. In addition, its application makes a great contribution to eliminating noise pollution in residential areas. It already has its own noise-absorbing characteristics and it is also relatively easy to grow.

Opening
On Friday 21 April, the festive opening of the new Aagterpoort underpass took place.
